Dewey, We Haven’t Forgotten You!

Ya know, Rehoboth Beach gets a lot of attention. (Rightly so, might we add.) However, there are other locations near Rehoboth that offer an array of activities, restaurants and much more for families. Dewey Beach lies between Rehoboth and the Atlantic Ocean. It isn’t very big, but for such a small package, holds a lot of appeal! Stretching a mile long and two blocks across it has a tiny population of 300 people, yet at the same time can host up to 30,000 people visiting on summer days.

Dewey Beach has received recognition across the nation over the past few years. In 2011 they were awarded Superstar Beach Status by the Natural Resources Defense Council and every year after from 2012 to 2014. This seaside town was originally named, “Rehoboth City,” and then became Dewey Beach in what is believed to be around 1898.

During the summer season, families can bring their canine members to the shore, as Dewey is one of the few towns that actually allow dogs on the beach! There are regulations to follow, including the rule that dogs must be licensed, but it’d be worth the hassle to bring your beloved furry friends to the water with you. For groups of friends wanting to make summer time memories, bonfires are also permitted but do require obtaining official permits and a fee. Or you can skip the work of building a bonfire and instead decided to jet ski, parasail, water ski or play a game of volleyball. City sponsored bonfires are hosted on Wednesdays at 7:30-11pm through August 26th.

We are told the area truly awakens after the sun sets. There are beach bars and nightclubs as well as live music at the Bottle and Cork. Through August 24th, weekly movie nights occur on Mondays at 8:30pm. Just grab your kids, a blanket and some snacks and show up at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey! The next two movies will be Maleficent on August 17th, and Muppets Most Wanted on August 24th.

The hours of Dewey Beach are from 5am until 1am. During the hours of 1-5am, no one is allowed near the water. The summer season consists of the period from May 15th until September 15th. So if you haven’t explored Dewey Beach, you still have some time to do so!
