Milton, a former shipbuilding village at the head of the tidal Broadkill River was settled over 300 years ago. Its location on the Broadkill (which meanders its way to the Delaware Bay) was ideal for shipbuilding and many shipbuilders and sea captains made Milton their home. The quaint and welcoming town is just a short jaunt west of Route 1 and a bit north of Lewes. Its historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places and its neighborhoods feature a variety of architectural styles, from Victorian to Arts and Crafts. Milton offers lovely town parks, unique shops, and in-town recreational opportunities (including fishing, canoeing, boating, and kayaking) for residents and visitors alike.
Year round, there’s a great selection of things to do in and around town. Milton offers outdoor summer concerts as well as a summer House and Garden Tour and lots of Christmas festivities. You’ll find galleries and artist’s studios, fine local eateries, and plenty of golf courses, both in Milton and nearby. Home to scenic neighborhoods and waterways, Milton is just down the road from Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge , a favorite of wildlife and landscape photographers, hikers, and birders. It’s also a short drive to Lewes, the First Town in the First State, and to the beach and boardwalk at nearby Rehoboth Beach. Milton attractions include Lavender Fields Farm, the renowned Dogfish Head Craft Brewery , and the Lydia Black Cannon Museum among others. The Milton Theater hosts live theater, movies, poetry readings and a variety of local entertainment and events.
Milton residents participate in numerous community and civic organizations and the town is home to churches, a volunteer fire department, a public library, more than a half-dozen major annual events, grocery and other retail stores conveniently located for day-to-day shopping, and is located in the Cape Henlopen School District.
